A hybrid model of integer programming and variable neighbourhood search for highly-constrained nurse rostering problems

چکیده
This paper presents a hybrid multi-objective model that combines Integer Programming (IP) and Variable Neighbourhood Search (VNS) to deal with highly constrained nurse rostering problems in modern hospital environments. An IP is first used to solve the subproblem which includes the full set of hard constraints and a subset of soft constrains. A basic VNS then follows as a postprocessing procedure to further improve the IPs resulting solutions, and the satisfaction of the excluded constraints from the preceding IP model is the VNSs major concern in its search. Very promising results are reported compared with a commercial genetic algorithm and a hybrid VNS approach on real instances arising in a Dutch hospital. The comparison results demonstrate that our hybrid approach does combine advantages of both the IP and the VNS to beat pure metaheuristics in solving this type of problems. We also believe that the proposed approach can be applied to other resource allocation problems with a large number of constraints.

A Constraint-directed Local Search Approach to Nurse Rostering Problems
In this paper, we investigate the hybridization of constraint programming and local search techniques within a large neighbourhood search scheme for solving highly constrained nurse rostering problems. As identified by the research, a crucial part of the large neighbourhood search is the selection of the fragment (neighbourhood, i.e. the set of variables), to be relaxed and re-optimized iterati...
متن کاملA Hybrid Constraint Programming Approach for Nurse Rostering Problems
Due to the complexity of nurse rostering problems (NRPs), Constraint Programming (CP) approaches on their own have shown to be ineffective in solving these highly constrained problems. We investigate a two-stage hybrid CP approach on real world benchmark NRPs. In the first stage, a constraint satisfaction model is used to generate weekly rosters consist of high quality shift sequences satisfyin...
متن کاملModeling and scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shop problems
Although several papers have studied no-idle scheduling problems, they all focus on flow shops, assuming one processor at each working stage. But, companies commonly extend to hybrid flow shops by duplicating machines in parallel in stages. This paper considers the problem of scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shops. A mixed integer linear programming model is first developed to mathematically form...
متن کاملA Hybrid Approach for Solving Real-World Nurse Rostering Problems
Nurse rostering is the process of creating a plan for nurse working hours over a given time horizon. This problem, most variants of which are NP-hard, has been studied extensively for many years. Still, practical nurse rostering is mostly done manually, often by highly qualified health care personnel. This underlines the need to address the challenges of realistic, applied nurse rostering, and ...
متن کاملNurse rostering using fuzzy logic: A case study
In this paper, we used the fuzzy set theory for modeling flexible constraints and uncertain data in nurse scheduling problems and proposed a fuzzy linear model for nurse rostering problems. The developed model can produce rosters that satisfy hospital objectives, ward requirements and staff preferences by satisfying their requests as much as possible. Fuzzy sets are used for modeling demands of...
